From Paralysis to Power
"I ended up coming out of hospital with a very terminal case of cancer actually. I was given a prognosis of six to 12 months. It's now been three and a half years."
The Sudden Diagnosis
Karen’s introduction to physiotherapy began after she became ill very suddenly. “I was diagnosed with what’s called de novo breast cancer,” she explains, “which basically means that it’s cancer that’s already spread.”
This discovery happened after she ended up in A&E with a back fracture. An MRI scan revealed the extent of the damage. “So I ended up being paralysed for quite a long period from below my chest right down,” Karen recalls. “I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t stand at one point.”
The Long Road Back
After radiotherapy and steroids, a hospital physiotherapist realised she had some movement in her feet. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. “I could stand eventually, but I couldn’t walk. So, physio got me marching on the spot.”
Recovery was slow. Karen spent a good 12 months in a wheelchair before eventually walking with a frame. However, she faced new challenges: her gait was “out of sync” and she was battling arthritis in her knee. After several rounds with an NHS physio, she realised she needed more rehabilitation. Her husband had successfully used Ellie for a neck problem, so Karen decided to get in touch.
Six Weeks of Impact
“We’ve been working together for about six weeks,” Karen says, noting the massive difference in a short period of time.

Feeling Energised
“You expect to feel quite tired after a session… but actually I find it quite energising. After you’ve been doing it for a while you want to do it again.”
